Apprenticeships & Traineeships
Looking for an Apprenticeship or Traineeship in the Aviation Industry?
What’s the difference?
Traineeships are available within a broad range of non-trade related occupations and are typically completed over a one to two year period. e.g. Logistics and Warehousing or Aircraft Surface Finisher. Apprenticeships cover skilled trades and take around three to four years to complete e.g Mechanical, Avionics and Structural trades.
Apprenticeships can be started in the aviation industry from 15 years or older however some occupations may have a minimum entry age. Candidates over 21 years of age are classified as mature age apprentices. Aviation apprenticeships are part of the Aeroskills training package with nationally recognised qualifications. Aviation is a highly regulated industry and working in these sectors you will need to meet licensing requirements.
Some entry pathways include through school based programs or an industry employer offering apprenticeship/traineeship programs. Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) subjects at school would be an advantage when applying for an apprenticeship. Another avenue is through aviation organisations with the benefit of earning a wage while you study and gain the practical experience for your trade. Apprenticeships Australia offers a range of schemes for funding and assistance to apprentices and trainees such as interest free trade support loans for tooling and everyday costs while completing your apprenticeship and a living away allowance if applicable.
More information can be found at Apprenticeships Australia and under Resources for Students tab on the Australian Apprenticeship Pathways Website: www.aapathways.com.au.
